MaKoR – a leadership training program for future counselors

The MaKoR (Madrichim K’tanim b’Ramah) program at Camp Ramah Boston is truly a one of a kind training program for future counselors.

It is a magical blend of classic camp joy and real-world leadership development!

In the mornings, our MaKoR participants dive into the full range of camp activities. They swim in the pool with friends, choose from a wide variety of chugim (electives) like Art, Sports, Dance, Board Games, Gaga, and even Farm. They’re still campers at heart, soaking up the ruach (spirit) and energy of Ramah with every splash, sketch, and spirited game. Then, in the afternoons, they shift roles, stepping into leadership mode as they join bunks and shadow experienced counselors. It’s here that the transformation begins. It’s the best of both worlds; pure fun and purposeful growth.

What truly sets this program apart are the regular leadership meetings with Daniela, our Rosh MaKoR (unit head), where the conversations get deep and meaningful. Participants reflect on challenges, share successes, set goals, and explore how to handle conflict, build relationships, and navigate tough moments with confidence and empathy.

Watching these teens blossom from shy and unsure at first, to confident & thoughtful leaders, is nothing short of amazing! They have found their voice, their style, and their place in the camp community.

This week was a shining example. Our MaKoR-ites took the lead in preparing all the campers, one bunk at a time, for the camp-wide Lip Sync and Dance Competition! They not only planned and practiced but they also taught each group for the Kabbalat Shabbat performance!

Seeing their faces light up when a camper runs to them for help, asks for advice, or simply offers a hug, it is clear that their joy is real. This is more than just a program, it’s a launchpad for future leaders, wrapped in tie-dye, sunscreen, Jewish soul, and endless camp spirit!
