Sha’ar Gets a Petting Zoo!

Our Sha’ar program is a unique and immersive experience designed to expose campers to Hebrew in a fun and meaningful way throughout the summer. Led by incredible Shlichim (Israeli counselors sent by the Jewish Agency), this program brings not only the Hebrew language but also Israeli culture right into the heart of Day Camp Ramah Boston.
Yes—it’s true! The Sha’ar counselors speak only Hebrew with their campers during the day. From the very first week, the campers have been learning new vocabulary and everyday expressions connected to camp life. Last week’s theme was animals, and our activities were all about bringing that topic to life.
Campers read/hear beloved Hebrew stories, such as “Mitz Petel” and “HaPil SheRatsa Lihyot Hachi”, and participated in related activities. The highlight of the week was Thursday’s hands-on mobile petting zoo! After learning animal names in Hebrew, the kids had the opportunity to pet, brush, and feed the animals, using their new vocabulary in real time. It was an incredible way to combine learning with pure fun. Their smiles said it all.
Watching their excitement and anticipation of the event all week long was heartwarming. And as our Sha’ar motto says: “Speak only Hebrew!”While your campers may not always speak Hebrew at home or share everything they’re learning, we’re proud to say that we see real progress. Many campers have expanded their vocabulary, respond in Hebrew during the day, and—most importantly—are truly enjoying the journey and not afraid to learn and use Hebrew.
The petting zoo was just one of many creative and engaging activities we use in Sha’ar to bring Hebrew learning to life. Stay tuned—there’s more to come!
