Sha’ar Makes us Proud! by Shlomi Zan, Rosh Sha’ar

“My beautiful land of Israel, who built you and planted you? We all together…”

And indeed, everyone was together. Seeing the faces of the campers from Tzrif (bunk) 12, the older group in our Sha’ar Hebrew immersion program, singing Eretz Yisrael Sheli (my land of Israel), proudly with a big smile was worth all the instructors’ efforts. The campers’ applause showed them that the effort and hard work they invested were not in vain. But how did it all begin?

This is our camp’s first year of the Sha’ar program. Two weeks ago, a delegation of three madrichot (counselors) from Israel arrived, and together with the Hebrew-speaking madrichot who live here, they started building and developing the groups for the younger and older campers, mostly in Hebrew. True, the first few days were challenging. Sometimes it seemed like the madrichot were speaking too fast. But soon, they learned from each other, and the campers realized how much fun it is to say, play, have lunch, and learn new vocabulary … all in Hebrew (with occasional translations to English).

“Bim, bam, bam, hot corn” – seeing the young campers from Tzrif  7 (our younger Sha’ar group) sitting in a circle, reading and singing from one of the books considered a classic in Israeli children’s literature, was a magnificent sight. This book is part of the program for young campers. As part of the program, the chanichim (campers) learn new vocabulary – including how to count, foods, colors, animals, and more – in Hebrew.

A week ago, the instructors for the older campers conducted an activity to learn the map of Israel and the locations of cities such as Tel Aviv, Haifa, Be’er Sheva, Kiryat Shmona, Eilat, and Jerusalem. They also learned the song Eretz Yisrael Sheli. The madrichot assigned each camper a line from the song. Watching their rehearsals throughout the week was an emotional spectacle. And finally, Friday arrived.

The campers sat in the first row, patiently and excitedly waiting for their turn to come up on stage and perform the song they had learned so well. After the tekes (ceremony) of awarding bracelets to the great campers of that week, it was the turn of Tzrif 12 to take the stage. And there they stood in a line, giggling and excited, waiting for the cue from the madrichot. Each of them sang their line in Hebrew exceptionally and sang the chorus together. The staff felt a great sense of pride and a feeling of satisfaction in the campers’ Hebrew accomplishments. Well done to the campers! Y’shar Koach!

ארץ ישראל שלי יפה וגם פורחת מי בנה ומי נטע? כולנו ביחד…. 

ואכן כולם היו ביחד. לראות את פניהם של חניכים של צריף 12, מעדת שער שרים את השיר המפורסם בגאווה, עם חיוך גדול היה שווה את כל המאמץ של המדריכות. תשואות ומחיאות הכפיים שקיבלו מחניכי כל המחנה, לימדו אותם שהמאמץ והעבודה הקשה שהשקיעו לא היה לשווא. אך איך הכול החל? 

זאת השנה הראשונה, שתוכנית שער, מתקיימת אצלנו במחנה. לפני שבועיים נחתה משלחת של שלוש מדריכות מישראל, ויחד עם מדריכות דוברות העברית שגרות כאן, החלו לבנות ולגבש את הקבוצות של הקטנים והגדולים והרוב אם לא הכול 

    ברית. נכון, הימים הראשונים לא היו קלים. היו חששות, לפעמים היה נדמה שהמדריכות מדברות מהר מדי. אך עד מהרה, למדו האחד את השני, והחניכים ראו כמה כיף לדבר, לשחק, ללכת לאכול צהרים, ללמוד אוצר מילים חדש…. והכול בעברית. (עם תרגום מדי פעם לאנגלית…)

“בים בם בם , תירס חם” – לראות את החניכים הקטנים יושבים במעגל, קוראים ושרים את אחד הספר שנחשב קלאסיקה בספרות הילדים בישראל, היה מחזה מרהיב.  הספר הזה הוא חלק מהתוכנית של הקטנים בהם הם לומדים, מספרים, מאכלים, צבעים, חיות ועוד בעברית. 

לפני שבוע המדריכות של הגדולים העבירו פעילות ללימוד מפת ארץ ישראל לחניכים הגדולים. החניכים למדו את מפת ארץ ישראל ולמדו היכן ממוקמות הערים: תל אביב, חיפה, באר שבע, קריית שמונה, אילת וירושלים. יחד עם זה למדו את השיר: “ארץ ישראל שלי יפה וגם פורחת…”. המדריכות חילקו לכל אחד ואחת מהחניכים והחניכות תפקיד ושורה מתוך השיר. לראות את האימונים שלהם לאורך כל השבוע היה מחזה מרגש. והנה הגיע יום שישי. 

החניכים ישבו בשורה הראשונה, וחיכו בסובלנות ובהתרגשות שיגיע תורם לעלות לבמה להציג את השיר שלמדו כל כך יפה. לאחר טקס הענקת צמידים למצטייני המחנה של אותו השבוע הגיע התור של צריף 12 להעלות על הבמה. והנה הם עומדים בשורה, מחויכים ומתרגשים מחכים לאות של המדריכות. כל אחד מהם שר את השורה שלו בעברית בצורה יוצאת מהכלל, ויחד כולם שרו את הפזמון. גאווה גדולה מילאה את לב הצוות, אך בעיקר תחושת סיפוק ומסוגלות של החניכים שלנו. יישר כוח לחניכים.
