MaKoR (Madrichim K’tanim b’Ramah)

MaKoR: Madrichim K’tanim b’Ramah

Leadership and counselor-in-training for campers entering grades 8 and 9

For our oldest campers, MaKoR offers the best of both worlds. Participants enjoy the fun of camp with their friends while taking their first real steps as leaders, role models, and future Ramah staff.

What Is MaKoR?

Madrichim K’tanim b’Ramah means “young counselors at Ramah.” MaKoR is our leadership and counselor-in-training program for teens who love camp and want to learn what it takes to make camp great for others. MaKoR participants are both campers and pseudo-staff. They take part in the daily program and also learn to lead, guide, and care for younger campers.

A Day in MaKoR

Each MaKoR day is built around three parts:

  • Leadership Training
Participants learn the skills that great counselors rely on: working with children, leading activities, solving problems, communicating clearly, and being a positive role model. Training is hands-on and interactive, and it’s led by experienced Ramah staff.
  • Camper Time
MaKoR participants are still campers! They join in activities, enjoy the daily program, and spend time with friends their own age.
  • Hands-On Experience
Most MaKoR participants are paired with a bunk of our youngest campers (1st grade and younger), where they help counselors run the day, lead activities, and build relationships with the kids in their care. Have a passion for a particular part of camp, such as sports, arts, or nature? MaKoR participants can request to help out in a specialty area that matches their interests.

What MaKoR Participants Gain

  • Confidence from leading activities and taking on real responsibility
  • Practical skills for working with children, which are useful for babysitting, tutoring, and future jobs
  • Leadership and teamwork experience, built alongside peers and mentors
  • A deeper connection to Ramah and to the values and community at the heart of camp

Your Path to Ramah Staff

MaKoR is the first step toward joining the Ramah Boston staff. The training and experience participants gain now will pay off when they’re old enough to join our staff. Many of the counselors who make camp special started out just like this!

Is MaKoR Right for My Teen?

MaKoR is a great fit for any 8th or 9th grader who loves camp and loves working with kids. No previous experience is needed, and there’s no interview. Just bring enthusiasm and a willingness to learn!

A girl carrying two white buckets filled with sticks walks through a garden area, with a younger child behind her. She wears a gray t-shirt, brown shorts, and a backpack. Green plants and trees surround them.   Three smiling teenage girls stand close together outdoors. They wear casual summer clothes—shorts and pink or light purple tops. Behind them are plants, a greenhouse, and wooden buildings, suggesting a garden or camp setting.

Four smiling kids pose in front of a brick wall. Three stand in the back, one wearing a red cap; the fourth kneels in front. One wears a T-shirt with Snoopy and the word Vibes. They appear happy and relaxed outdoors.
