Community Report 2021
Shalom!
We call this our community report. It is created with our deep appreciation for all who made it possible for our campers and staff members to return to their Ramah communities at our overnight and day camps.
Ramah returned in 2021 – stronger than ever. It was a summer of joy, healing and belonging for the close to 1,500 young campers and staff members at Camp Ramah New England in Palmer and Ramah Day Camp Greater DC. Ramah was a powerful restorative force – a place to feel free, to forge in-person friendships, to embrace the rejuvenating return to joyous Jewish living.
Todah Rabbah – thank you for entrusting Ramah with your children and providing your generous philanthropic investment. With your loving support, you have affirmed that Ramah is essential to the well-being of our children and young adults, as they grow into the best versions of themselves and into strong, committed Jews. As we reflect on a spectacular kayitz (summer), we look forward to working together to build a strong future for Ramah, and a strong future for our children.

Stuart Katz, President

Rabbi Ed Gelb, CEO
“Our boys came home every day with a smile. We love hearing them sing Hebrew songs, chant the blessings, and tell us about Israel.” -Marissa and Michael Privman, Day Camp parents
Joy ♦ שמחה ♦ Simcha
Our campers and staff members felt profound joy.
How exhilarating it was for our campers and staff members to return to camp, after a hiatus of almost two years! After long months with too much time at home, often learning on computer screens and physically separated from friends and teachers, the members of our overnight and day camp communities blissfully relished being together, in person.
Some of the joy came from the simple pleasures of being at camp with peers and friends: the thrill of a big splash in the Palmer water park. The delight of building a new structure with the Big Blue Blocks at the day camp. The ease of everyday camp activities: playing silly games with bunkmates, making s’mores around a campfire, tossing a Frisbee.
With each passing day, campers became less inhibited and more open to new experiences. The sheer exuberance was palpable as our campers and staff got more comfortable with the near-normal of camp and its special rhythms and traditions. With each successive session of shira (singing) and rikud (dancing), more campers jumped up to participate – singing louder, moving faster, drawing their friends into the crowd.
Healing ♦ ריפוי ♦ Repui
The summer provided moments of real healing.
The mental, emotional, social and spiritual health of our young people has been significantly impacted over the last two years. Ramah, through its pioneering camper care system, has long provided a firm foundation for addressing these challenges at camp. In 2021, as campers pivoted to in-person engagement with their peers, Ramah’s staff members redoubled their efforts so that each child felt supported, listened to, comforted. New and creative ways were also found to bolster staff members to enable them to deliver exceptional care to our campers.
Fortunately, camp itself – and the ability to be outdoors nearly all the time – helped revive so many who had felt isolated. Our camps provided carefree environments, with limitless ways for campers to get dirty, let down their guard, and build confidence and self-esteem. Campers sought out numerous restorative experiences: In Palmer, they cared for the farm animals or spent time with a comfort dog. In Germantown, they tended the lush permaculture garden and then harvested the beautiful vegetables they had grown.
At camp, many had their first opportunities since the start of the pandemic to forge new friendships or to refresh and deepen old ones. The ability to interact directly with others, unmediated by a computer or phone screen, was restorative.
“Our child had life-changing experiences. She was clearly loved and appreciated for who she is. What a joy to see her having a carefree summer.” -Julie Fisher and Dan Shapiro, CRNE parents
Belonging ♦ קהילה ♦ Kehillah
Together, we created communities where everyone belonged.
At Ramah, we work to build welcoming and inclusive communities. From the launch of our Tikvah Program for young people with disabilities in 1970 to our ongoing commitment to actively include people of all sexual and racial identities, Ramah seeks to value each person for who they are, in all of their dimensions.
In bringing back Ramah in 2021, we focused on giving each person a sense of belonging – to the tzrif (bunk) or kvutzah (small day camp group); to the camp community; and to the Jewish community as a whole.
Through our camper care framework, we ensured that each child had a friend and felt valued within the tzrif or kvutzah.
Our camp communities were once again filled to the brim with inspiring and joyous Jewish living. Each day, Jewish music, tefilot (prayers) and brachot (blessings) filled our camps. Each week, our Palmer community gathered for a Shabbat filled with rest and ruach. Each session, our camps became magical Jewish places where campers could extend their Jewish knowledge and strengthen their Jewish identities.
With the return of these indispensable Jewish experiences, Ramah is igniting our campers’ and staff members’ life-long Jewish engagement. With newfound confidence and knowledge, they are poised to make the world a better place.
